The Story of Mooring Eats: How a Family From Syria Brought Authentic Mediterranean Flavours to South Etobicoke

ree

If you’ve ever walked down Lake Shore Blvd W in South Etobicoke, you’ve probably noticed a cozy little restaurant with the turquoise sign and the irresistible smell of fresh shawarma grilling inside. That’s Mooring Eats — a family-owned Mediterranean and Syrian-inspired restaurant that has quickly become a community favourite.

But behind the popular shawarma plates, handmade kababs, and viral shawarma poutine is a story rooted in family, heritage, and a passion for fresh, authentic food.

A Taste of Syria, Recreated in Toronto

Mooring Eats was founded in 2019 by Spiro Abdalnor, who grew up in the coastal city of Latakia, Syria. Spiro’s father owned a restaurant back home, and from a young age, Spiro learned the rhythms of real hospitality: waking up early to prep vegetables, marinating meats with traditional spices, and serving meals with generosity and pride.

When he moved to Canada, Spiro carried those memories with him — the flavours, the smells, the techniques — and hoped one day to share them with a new community. Mooring Eats became that dream come to life.

Today, the restaurant is still run as a true family business. Spiro leads the kitchen with the same passion he learned growing up, while his son Wajih manages media, marketing, and community outreach. Together, they’ve built a restaurant that feels warm, welcoming, and true to its roots.

Fresh, Authentic, and Made From Scratch — Every Day

What sets Mooring Eats apart is the commitment to doing things the right way. Almost everything you taste here is made fresh in-house:

  • Shawarma marinated daily

  • Hand-rolled beef kababs

  • Fresh vegetables chopped every morning

  • Homemade garlic sauce, tahini, toum, and dressings

  • Fries made in-house for the perfect crisp

  • Zesty pickled turnips and toppings prepared from scratch

This dedication to freshness has earned Mooring Eats a reputation for serving some of the best shawarma in Etobicoke — and customers regularly drive from across the GTA for it.
